ARENAS
The Russell Memorial Arena serves the Town's hockey and broomball teams, as well as providing for figure skating, precision skating and public skating. It is equipped with artificial ice, a concession stand, change rooms, washroom facilities, grandstands protected by Plexiglas, an electronic scoreboard and an inside viewing area. Recent renovations include showers in the three dressing rooms, and improvements to the lobby. 

Angusville, Binscarth, and Inglis have natural ice skating rinks. 

Activities at the Angusville rink include broomball, figure skating, hockey and rec. hockey. The rink has a kitchen and change rooms and can be rented for social functions.

The Binscarth rink is used primarily for broomball and public skating.

The Inglis rink is used for broomball, figure skating, as well as recreation and squirt hockey. This rink has meeting rooms and kitchen facilities.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Two beach volleyball courts are located in Russell, one beside the pool, and the other at the south east corner of Alexandria and Manitoba Avenues.

There are two courts at the Inglis Beach, and an additional court is located at the Binscarth Park and Pool. The courts are open for public use as well as organized sporting events.

BALL DIAMONDS

Russell has three ball diamonds available for public use, all with backstops. There are six metal grandstands that can be moved to the various sports fields.

Binscarth has five ball diamonds. This includes one senior diamond, two minor diamonds and two ball diamonds at the school.

Five ball diamonds are also available for recreational use in Inglis (three at Inglis School and 2 at Inglis Beach). 

BOWLING ALLEY
Banner County Recreation has four lanes of five-pin bowling and is equipped with automatic pinsetters. 

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
Moose Lake Trail is a groomed cross country ski trail on the edge of the Riding Mountain National Park, 15 minutes east of Russell.

Rivendell trails are located 31 km north of Russell and one km west. The 25 km groomed trail can accommodate all levels of skiers as well as classic and ski skating. 
Trails can also be found in Asessippi Provincial Park.

CURLING RINKS
The Russell Curling Rink has four sheets of artificial ice, a change room for curlers, a storage and workroom for the icemaker and a large waiting room. An active Club holds four bonspiels a year and hosts provincial and zone competition. Facilities include a kitchen, bar, pool table, piano, and comfortable spectator seating.

The Binscarth Curling Club has four sheets of artificial ice, full kitchen facilities and a seasonal bar.

Inglis Curling Rink has three sheets of artificial ice and hosts regular curling draws and bonspiels.

FISHING

Fishing is a popular activity in the region. Lake of the Prairies is stocked with world class walleye, northern pike, and perch while Spear Lake has good trout fishing. In 1989 the Department of Natural Resources stocked Spear Lake with 25,000 rainbow trout and installed aeration equipment. More rainbow trout have been released into the lake since 1989 and picnic sites and a boat launch has been added to the site. In the winter, there is ice fishing for the hardy.

GOLF COURSES

Russell & District Golf Club, operates a Class III nine hole golf course (par 36) in the R.M. of Silver Creek. The Club offers grass greens, watered fairways, a driving range, licensed clubhouse and fairways, and small party catering. Battery operated carts as well as golf clubs may be rented.

Binscarth features a Class IV nine hole golf course with sand greens and putting mats. It is maintained with volunteer help, keeping fees to a minimum.

HUNTING

Full outfitting and guide services area available for bear, moose, deer, waterfowl, and upland game bird hunting. Bow hunters and wildlife photographers are welcome.

INGLIS BEACH (ASESSIPPI)
"The local swimming hole" is five km northwest of Inglis on Hwy. #83 in the Shell Valley. The beach has two ball diamonds, two beach volleyball courts, children's paddling pool, play ground, seasonal concession, camping and picnic areas, and links to the Trans Canada Trail for hiking and mountain biking.

LEISURE CENTRES
The regions leisure/activity centres are rental facilities suitable for hosting bingos, special events and meeting of civic and service organizations.

The Russell Leisure Centre has three pool tables, card tables, piano, kitchen facilities and washrooms.

The Binscarth Drop-In Centre facilities include a kitchen and dining area, two pool tables and a shuffle-board, a piano, and speaker and microphone.

The Inglis & District Activity Centre has meeting rooms, kitchen facilities and a piano.

PLAYGROUNDS
Two Russell playgrounds are equipped with climbing apparatus, swings, slides, and other equipment.

The community of Angusville has a playground, unserviced camping, covered cook house and picnic area along the Trans Canada Trail.

PAINTBALL PARK
Variations of this paintmark tag game are played and include night games for more experienced players. The park is located on provincial road #579, eight miles southwest of Russell on the edge of the Assiniboine Valley. It includes six fields of hills, tree paths and many manmade and natural obstacles. The park also has BBQ and picnic areas. 

TENNIS COURTS
There are three tennis courts in Russell and one in Inglis that are open for public use throughout the tennis season.

SWIMMING POOLS

Binscarth Park & Pool is a community owned campground and swimming pool located in the Silver Creek Valley, two km south of Binscarth. This pool is the largest outdoor pool on the Yellowhead highway. The 72' x 126' pool goes from 10" to a junior Olympic size deep end and features two diving boards, two slides, one kiddy slide, lap swimming, five fountains and a large deck area. Lifeguards are on duty.

Other feature of the park include: two horseshoe pits, beach volleyball, mini golf course, playground, hiking trail, large picnic area with covered cook shack and BBQ pit, a covered deck and concession booth.

Russell's outdoor 40' x 80' pool is busy all summer with swimming lessons for all ages, aquasizes, earlybird swim, lane swimming, and a speed swimming club. Change rooms are equipped with showers and washrooms. Other features: diving board, slide, kiddy pool, and whirlpool. 

 

LAKES & BEACHES

Asessippi Provincial Park - Lake of the Prairies          
Asessippi, Manitoba's smallest Provincial Park is located near Highway #83 at the confluence of the Assiniboine and Shell Rivers. Construction of the Shellmouth Dam caused the formation of Lake of the Prairies, which now provides some of the best fishing in Manitoba. In order to maintain high quality angling, a slot limit for walleye is in effect and fish between 45 and 70 cm must be released. The use of barbless hooks is mandatory.

The Park also provides camping, unsupervised swimming, children's playgrounds, boat rentals and docking, and a seasonal concession.

Bird watchers have identified 93 species of birds in the Park.

The Canadian Recreational Canoe Association classified this part of the Assiniboine River as beginner with grade one rapids.

Cottage developments line the lake along the Assiniboine Valley providing year round access and rental cottages.

Silver Beach 
Silver Beach is located north of Angusville on PR #476. Cottages line the north shore and a public beach, playground and boat docking facilities are available to all.

CAMPGROUNDS

The Russell Campground has free overnight camping and provides electrical outlets, two kitchen shelters, drinking water, toilet facilities and a playground.

Camping is available at Asessippi Provincial Park,
Binscarth Park & Pool, Inglis Beach, Russell Golf Course and Angusville Millennium Park. Binscarth Park & Pool has 28 serviced campsites and 6 unserviced sites available. Inglis Beach has 30 serviced campsites with unlimited un-serviced campsites. There are 65 electrical and 43 non-electrical sites at Asessippi Provincial Park. Modern showers and washrooms are available. 

FRANK SKINNER ARBORETUM TRAIL
A self-guided three km trail is located at the nursery of one of Canada's most innovative horticulturists, Dr. Frank Skinner. The original acreage and trail are a Provincial Historic Site and highlight some of the 150 plant varieties developed to survive prairie winters. A heritage garden was recently added. This site is located eight km north of Inglis on Highway #83.

TRANS CANADA TRAIL
The Manitoba Recreational Trail Association is the designated organization building the Trans-Canada Trail in Manitoba. It is an umbrella group providing the support, knowledge, information, technology and resources necessary to promote the construction and use of the recreational trails throughout Manitoba thereby improving the economy, environment and human well-being. This association is providing the link for the Trans-Canada trail from Saskatchewan to Ontario via the Rossburn subdivision.

Saskatchewan has designated Madge Lake as the border crossing into Manitoba. The Crocus Trail provides a link between the Rossburn subdivision and Madge Lake. 

RIDING MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK
The Victorian style, full service resort at Clear Lake features the finest collection of log buildings in Canada. These graceful buildings, framed by towering spruce trees, include the Visitor Centre, tennis clubhouse, dance hall, bandstand, movie theatre, restaurants and cabins. The elm-shaded lawn along the main beach has English gardens, a playground, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, beach volleyball and large open areas.

The park offers everything from hiking and water skiing to scenic drives, craft classes, biking, horse-back riding and nature hikes.

The 1150 sq. miles of wilderness offers wildlife viewing, nature hikes, biking, horseback riding, camping and numerous other educational opportunities.

The western boundary of the park begins 10 km east of Inglis.
