The member municipal corporations of the area are aggressive and proactive in their approach to economic development, fiscal responsibility and provision of services to local residents.
Faced with senior government downloading local governments have looked toward new business and construction growth, rather than mill rate increases to cover increasing expenses.
The financial position of all municipalities in the region is very strong. The Councils of the region have been able to maintain the municipal mill rate at or near a 0% increase for a number of years. The financial prudence displayed by the region combined with a number of economic initiatives has translated into increased economic activity throughout the area.
Through careful planning and strict budgeting, the municipalities have minimized the impact of reduced provincial and federal government spending on local taxpayers.
Cost of Living
Food, transportation, shelter, and personal income taxes are the four highest expense categories in the region. The total spent regionally on these four categories is slightly lower than the provincial average for the same categories and makes up approximately 60% of total spending.
A greater percentage of disposable income is spent on transportation than the provincial average, but a smaller percentage is spent on shelter and personal taxes. All other categories are very close or identical to the provincial averages.
